My New Favorite Core Exercise

I have a favorite new core exercise and wanted to share its incredible benefits with the masses.  It’s called a Turkish Get-Up.

What the h*ll is a Turkish Get-Up you ask?

The Turkish Get-Up (TGU) is a functional strength movement and mechanically correct method of coming from a lying position on the floor to standing with weight locked overhead.  It requires all the muscles of the body working collectively (but particularly the core) to finish the movement.  Here are some of the main benefits:

  • Fat loss; its a metabolism booster
  • Flexibility and balance
  • Full body exercise and strength builder; uses the legs, glutes, core, shoulder, back, triceps, forearm and increases grip strength
  • One of the best core/ab exercises period.

Here’s a link to a how to video: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/turkish_get_up_training.htm

It’s a great way to add variety to an already existing core routine.  TGU’s requires little equipment (a kettlebell, dumbbell, barbell or sandbag), is scalable to your ability and can help rebuild balance and range of motion.  If you haven’t done this one before see a trainer about TGU’s and other core exercises that you would like to try.
